Turquoise Identification: How to Tell If Turquoise Is Real
That blue-green stone in your hand might be turquoise — or it might be dyed howlite, magnesite, or straight-up plastic. Turquoise is one of the most faked gemstones on the planet. Some estimates suggest that over 90% of "turquoise" sold in the market today is either fake, heavily treated, or reconstituted from turquoise dust.
The real stuff has been mined and traded for over 6,000 years. Ancient Egyptians, Persians, and Native Americans all prized it. King Tut's death mask is inlaid with turquoise. The Aztecs considered it more valuable than gold. And today, high-grade natural turquoise from famous mines can sell for hundreds of dollars per carat.
So knowing how to tell real turquoise from fake is a genuinely useful skill — whether you're rock hunting in the Southwest, browsing a gem show, or eyeing that turquoise bracelet at a roadside stand. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is Turquoise, Exactly?
Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminum phosphate mineral with the chemical formula CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈·4H₂O. That copper content is what gives it that iconic blue color. It forms in arid regions where copper-rich groundwater percolates through aluminum-containing rock — usually near copper deposits.
It's an opaque mineral (you can't see through it), and it typically forms as veins, nodules, or thin seams in host rock. The surrounding rock creates the dark lines and patterns you see in turquoise — that's called the matrix, and it's one of the most important identification features.
On the Mohs hardness scale, turquoise ranges from 5 to 6 — about the same as a knife blade. That's hard enough to take a polish but soft enough that it requires some care. High-quality turquoise is harder and more compact; lower-quality material can be chalky and porous.
The Color Spectrum: Why Turquoise Isn't Always Blue
People assume turquoise is always that classic sky blue. It's not. Turquoise comes in a full range from vivid blue to blue-green to green to yellowish-green — and the color tells you about its chemistry.
- Vivid blue ("robin's egg blue"): High copper content, minimal iron. This is the most valued color. Sleeping Beauty turquoise from Arizona is famous for this pure blue.
- Blue-green: Mix of copper and some iron. Very common and still highly desirable. Kingman turquoise often shows this shade.
- Green: Higher iron and zinc content replacing some copper. Carico Lake turquoise from Nevada is known for its bright green color.
- Yellowish-green: Significant iron content. Some collectors specifically seek this out — it's rarer than you'd think in natural form.
No single color is "more real" than another. Color variation is actually a sign of authenticity — fake turquoise tends to be unnaturally uniform.

Understanding the Matrix
The matrix is the pattern of dark lines, veins, and patches running through turquoise. It's remnants of the host rock that the turquoise formed around — usually limonite (brown/yellow), iron pyrite (gold/metallic), or black chert/manganese oxide.
Matrix patterns vary dramatically by mine, which is why experienced collectors can often identify which mine a piece of turquoise came from just by looking at its matrix:
- Spiderweb matrix: Fine, intricate web-like pattern. Highly prized. Number 8 turquoise from Nevada and some Kingman material show this.
- Water web: Thin, delicate lines on a translucent-looking background. Very rare and valuable.
- Heavy matrix: Thick veins of host rock. More common, less valuable, but still authentic.
- No matrix: Clean, solid color with no visible host rock. Sleeping Beauty turquoise is famous for this. Don't confuse it with fake — some of the most valuable turquoise has zero matrix.
The key thing about real matrix: it's irregular. Natural matrix has depth — the lines vary in thickness, color, and spacing. Fake matrix (painted or printed on dyed howlite) looks flat, repetitive, and suspiciously perfect.
8 Tests to Identify Real Turquoise
1. The Visual Inspection
Start with your eyes. Real turquoise has subtle color variations — it's not one flat, uniform shade. Look closely and you'll see slight shifts in hue, tiny darker or lighter spots, and natural imperfections. If it looks absolutely perfect and uniform, that's a red flag.
Check the matrix too. Does it look organic and irregular, or does it look painted on? Real matrix has depth and varies in width. Fake matrix often looks like someone drew lines with a marker.
2. The Temperature Test
Pick up the stone and hold it against your cheek or the inside of your wrist. Real turquoise (like most natural minerals) feels cool to the touch and takes a while to warm up from your body heat. Plastic and resin fakes feel warmer immediately and reach body temperature quickly.
This isn't definitive on its own — dyed howlite will also feel cool because it's a real mineral. But if your "turquoise" feels like plastic from the start, it probably is plastic.
3. The Hot Needle Test
Heat a sewing needle with a lighter until it's glowing, then touch it to an inconspicuous spot on the stone. What happens tells you a lot:
- Nothing happens: Good sign — real turquoise won't react
- Melts, smokes, or smells like burning plastic: It's plastic or heavy resin. Toss it.
- Small black mark that wipes off: Might be stabilized turquoise (resin-treated real turquoise). This is still real turquoise, just enhanced.
Warning: This test can damage the stone slightly, so do it somewhere hidden — the back of a cabochon, inside a drill hole, or the bottom of a rough piece.
4. The Scratch Test
Turquoise sits at 5-6 on the Mohs hardness scale. That means a steel knife (5.5) will barely scratch it — good turquoise might not scratch at all. A copper penny (3.5) definitely shouldn't scratch it.
Howlite (the most common turquoise imitator) is only 3.5 on the Mohs scale, so a knife will scratch it easily. If your "turquoise" scratches like chalk under a knife blade, it's probably howlite or magnesite.
5. The Acetone Test
Dab a cotton swab in acetone (nail polish remover — make sure it's the real stuff, not the "non-acetone" kind) and rub it on the stone. If blue or green color transfers to the swab, the stone has been dyed. Real turquoise color is structural — it's part of the mineral itself and won't come off.
This is one of the most reliable tests for catching dyed howlite, dyed magnesite, and dyed chalcedony. The dye lifts right off.
6. The Weight Test
Real turquoise has a specific gravity of about 2.6-2.8 — it feels noticeably heavier than plastic (around 1.0-1.4) and slightly heavier than howlite (around 2.5). If you've handled turquoise before, the weight gives it away quickly.
This is harder to judge if you don't have comparison pieces. But if a large piece of "turquoise" feels suspiciously light, trust your gut.
7. The Price Test
This isn't a lab test, but it's arguably the most practical one. Natural, untreated turquoise is genuinely expensive — high-grade material from famous mines runs $50-$500+ per carat. If someone is selling you a big chunk of "natural turquoise" for $10, it's not natural turquoise.
Even stabilized turquoise (real, but treated) sells for $5-$50 per carat depending on quality. Anything selling for pennies per carat is either reconstituted or outright fake.
8. The Magnification Test
Get a 10x loupe or jeweler's magnifier and look closely at the surface. Real turquoise has a natural, somewhat porous texture with tiny pits and irregularities. Dyed howlite under magnification shows dye concentrating in surface cracks — you'll see darker blue lines where dye pooled in fractures.
Reconstituted turquoise under magnification looks like a mosaic of tiny fragments glued together — because that's literally what it is. You can see the boundaries between particles.
The Turquoise Treatment Spectrum
Not all turquoise treatment is dishonest. There's a legitimate spectrum, and understanding it matters:
Natural (Untreated)
Exactly as it came out of the ground, just cut and polished. This is the rarest and most valuable category — maybe 3-5% of turquoise on the market. Only the hardest, most compact turquoise can be used in its natural state. It's sometimes called "gem-grade" or "jewelry-grade" natural.
Stabilized
Real turquoise that's been infused with clear epoxy or resin under pressure. This hardens softer material so it can be cut and polished without crumbling. The color often deepens slightly. This makes up the majority of legitimate turquoise jewelry and is perfectly acceptable — as long as it's disclosed.
Enhanced/Color-Treated
Real turquoise that's been dyed or color-enhanced to improve its appearance. Usually lower-grade material. Less valuable than stabilized, but still contains actual turquoise.
Reconstituted
Turquoise dust, chips, and fragments mixed with resin and compressed into blocks, then cut into shapes. Contains real turquoise material but is essentially a manufactured product. Significantly less valuable.
Simulated (Fake)
No turquoise whatsoever. Dyed howlite, dyed magnesite, plastic, ceramic, or "block" material. Worth almost nothing. This is what you're trying to avoid.
Common Turquoise Imposters
These minerals and materials frequently get sold as turquoise — intentionally or not:
- Dyed howlite: The #1 turquoise fake. Howlite is a white mineral with gray veining that takes dye incredibly well. When dyed blue-green, it looks shockingly similar to turquoise at first glance. The giveaway: it's softer (scratches easily), lighter, and the acetone test reveals dye.
- Dyed magnesite: Another white mineral that absorbs dye. Very similar to howlite as a turquoise imitator. Often sold as "white turquoise" when undyed (it's not turquoise at all).
- Chrysocolla: A legitimate copper mineral that's naturally blue-green. It's softer than turquoise (2-4 Mohs) and has a more translucent, glassy appearance. Not a fake — it's sometimes confused with turquoise honestly.
- Variscite: A green phosphate mineral that resembles green turquoise. Slightly softer. Often found near turquoise deposits and sometimes sold alongside it.
- Amazonite: A green-blue feldspar. Has a slightly different luster and crystal structure from turquoise. Usually more translucent.
- Dyed chalcedony: Chalcedony dyed turquoise blue. Harder than real turquoise but fails the acetone test.
Famous Turquoise Mines and Their Signatures
Part of the fun of turquoise collecting is learning to recognize material from specific mines. Each mine produces turquoise with distinct characteristics:
American Mines
- Sleeping Beauty (Arizona): Famous for its pure, solid blue color with little to no matrix. The mine closed in 2012, making existing material increasingly valuable.
- Kingman (Arizona): Ranges from blue to blue-green, often with distinctive black or brown matrix. Still actively mined. One of the most recognizable turquoise in the world.
- Bisbee (Arizona): Deep blue with chocolate brown matrix. Extremely valuable — the mine closed decades ago. Often called the "Tiffany of turquoise."
- Number 8 (Nevada): Known for its golden-brown spiderweb matrix on blue-green background. Mine is exhausted; prices are very high.
- Royston (Nevada): Beautiful range of blue and green, sometimes with both in the same stone. Brown matrix. Still producing.
- Cerrillos (New Mexico): One of the oldest turquoise mines in North America — mined for over 1,000 years. Green to blue-green with distinctive tan matrix.
- Carico Lake (Nevada): Known for its distinctive lime green color, sometimes with a rare "clear blue" variety. Very collectible.
International Sources
- Persian/Iranian turquoise: Considered the finest in the world historically. Pure sky blue, often matrix-free. The Nishapur mines have been producing for over 2,000 years.
- Chinese turquoise: Hubei province produces significant quantities. Ranges widely in quality from gem-grade to low-quality. Green and blue-green are common.
- Tibetan turquoise: Typically green to blue-green. Culturally significant — used in Tibetan jewelry for centuries.
How Much Is Turquoise Worth?
Turquoise value depends heavily on quality, treatment, and provenance:
- Natural gem-grade (top mines): $50–$500+ per carat. Exceptional Bisbee or Lander Blue pieces can exceed $1,000 per carat.
- Natural good-quality: $10–$50 per carat
- Stabilized (good color/matrix): $5–$30 per carat
- Stabilized (common): $1–$5 per carat
- Reconstituted: $0.10–$1 per carat
- Fake (howlite/plastic): Worth nothing as turquoise
Mine provenance matters enormously. A cabochon of natural Lander Blue turquoise (from a mine that produced only about 100 pounds total) can sell for $300-$500 per carat. The same size piece from an unknown Chinese mine might be $5-$10 natural.

If you want to start collecting turquoise, here are some practical tips:
- Buy from reputable dealers. At gem shows, established dealers with reputations to protect are your best bet. Ask about treatment — honest dealers will tell you.
- Learn to recognize specific mines. The more turquoise you handle, the better you get at identifying material by sight. Start with well-known mines like Kingman and Sleeping Beauty.
- Ask for documentation. For expensive pieces, ask where the material came from. Reputable sellers can usually trace provenance.
- Start with stabilized. It's more affordable, still real turquoise, and durable enough for everyday wear. Graduate to natural as your knowledge (and budget) grows.
- Avoid "too good to be true" deals. A massive natural turquoise pendant for $25 at a tourist shop? It's not natural. Period.
Caring for Real Turquoise
Turquoise is porous and relatively soft, so it needs more care than harder gemstones:
- Keep it away from chemicals. Sunscreen, perfume, cleaning products, and even skin oils can discolor turquoise over time. Put your turquoise jewelry on last and take it off first.
- Store it separately. At 5-6 Mohs, turquoise scratches easily. Keep it in a soft pouch away from harder stones.
- Clean gently. A damp soft cloth is all you need. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or chemical jewelry cleaners on turquoise.
- Avoid prolonged sunlight. Extended UV exposure can fade turquoise color over time, especially in treated material.
