Amethyst Identification: How to Tell If Amethyst Is Real
Amethyst is the world's most popular purple gemstone — and one of the most recognizable minerals on the planet. That violet glow inside a cracked-open geode is what gets most people hooked on rocks in the first place. But amethyst isn't always the deep royal purple you see on Instagram. It ranges from barely-there lavender to nearly black, and telling real amethyst from glass, dyed quartz, or synthetic knockoffs takes a trained eye.
The good news: amethyst has distinctive features that make identification straightforward once you know what to look for. This guide covers everything — from the science behind that purple color to hands-on tests you can do right now with whatever purple stone is sitting in front of you.
What Is Amethyst?
Amethyst is a variety of quartz (SiO₂) — the same mineral family as citrine, rose quartz, and smoky quartz. What makes it purple is trace amounts of iron impurities combined with natural irradiation. Specifically, iron atoms (Fe³⁺) get embedded in the quartz crystal lattice during formation, and then gamma radiation from surrounding radioactive elements causes a charge transfer that absorbs green and yellow light wavelengths — leaving you with purple.
It's a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it harder than steel. It has a vitreous (glassy) luster, conchoidal fracture, and a white streak. It's transparent to translucent, and it forms hexagonal prismatic crystals — those classic six-sided points you see in geodes and crystal clusters.
Historically, amethyst was considered as precious as diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. Ancient Greeks believed it could prevent intoxication (the name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning "not drunk"). It was a stone of royalty — only the wealthy could afford it. That changed in the 19th century when massive deposits were discovered in Brazil, making it widely available. Today it's classified as semi-precious, but top-grade specimens still command serious money.
How Amethyst Forms
Understanding how amethyst forms helps you know where to find it and what real specimens should look like.
Most amethyst forms in one of two geological settings:
- Volcanic geodes: When basaltic lava flows cool, gas bubbles get trapped inside, creating hollow cavities. Over millions of years, silica-rich groundwater seeps into these cavities and slowly deposits quartz crystals on the walls. If the groundwater contains dissolved iron and the surrounding rock provides natural radiation, those crystals grow purple. This is how the famous Brazilian and Uruguayan amethyst geodes form — some of them are the size of a car.
- Hydrothermal veins: Hot, mineral-rich water flows through cracks and fractures in rock, depositing quartz crystals as it cools. Amethyst formed this way tends to appear as individual crystals or crystal clusters rather than geode linings. Much of the amethyst from Africa, Mexico, and parts of the U.S. forms this way.
The formation process explains several identification features: real amethyst crystals are always hexagonal (six-sided), they often show color zoning from uneven iron distribution during growth, and they frequently occur alongside other minerals like calcite, goethite, and hematite inclusions.
The Color Spectrum of Amethyst
Not all purple quartz looks the same, and the color variations tell you a lot about origin and quality.
- Deep Siberian: The gold standard. Rich, saturated purple with subtle red and blue flashes. Originally from Russia's Ural Mountains (now mostly depleted), but similar colors come from Uruguay and Zambia. This is the most valuable amethyst color.
- Medium purple: The most common grade. Good saturation, clearly purple without being dark. Brazilian amethyst often falls here. This is what most people picture when they think "amethyst."
- Rose de France: A light lilac or lavender shade. It was considered inferior for centuries but has become fashionable in jewelry in recent years. If your amethyst is very pale, it might be Rose de France — or it might just be low-grade material.
- Bi-color (ametrine): When amethyst and citrine occur in the same crystal, you get ametrine — purple and yellow zones in one stone. Almost all commercial ametrine comes from the Anahí Mine in Bolivia. It's genuine and can be quite valuable.
- Nearly black: Very dark amethyst can appear almost black until you hold it up to light. This deep material comes from certain mines in Uruguay and India. Some collectors love it; gemologists generally prefer material that's saturated but still clearly purple.

The critical thing for identification: real amethyst almost always shows color zoning. If you look at a real amethyst crystal from different angles, the purple isn't uniform — it's concentrated in certain growth layers while other zones are lighter or even colorless. This phantom-like banding is one of the strongest indicators of authenticity.
Where to Find Amethyst
Amethyst is one of the more findable gemstones — it occurs on every continent and in dozens of countries. Here are the major sources:
International
- Brazil: The world's largest producer. Rio Grande do Sul state alone produces thousands of tons annually. Brazilian amethyst ranges from pale to medium purple and often comes in spectacular geodes. The town of Ametista do Sul is literally named after the mineral.
- Uruguay: Smaller quantities but generally deeper, more saturated color than Brazilian material. Uruguayan amethyst is prized for its rich purple. The Artigas department is the main source.
- Zambia: Produces some of the world's finest amethyst. Zambian material often shows that coveted Deep Siberian color with reddish secondary hues. The Kariba Mine is particularly famous.
- South Korea: An underrated source. Korean amethyst from the Cheongsong region has been prized in Asia for centuries.
- Mexico: The Las Vigas and Guerrero deposits produce beautiful dark crystals on matrix — highly sought by mineral collectors.
United States
- Arizona: The Four Peaks Mine produces some of the finest amethyst in North America — deep purple with red flashes. It's a remote, helicopter-access-only mine, which adds to the mystique (and price).
- Georgia: Jackson's Crossroads is a famous collecting site with pale to medium purple crystals.
- North Carolina: Several mines in the western mountains produce amethyst. Some offer fee-dig experiences.
- Maine & Pennsylvania: Smaller occurrences but genuine amethyst can be found in pegmatite deposits.
- Montana & Virginia: Less well-known but documented sources exist.
If you're hunting for amethyst, look in areas with volcanic basalt (for geodes) or in pegmatite and hydrothermal vein systems. Road cuts, stream beds, and mine dumps are productive spots. Many states have fee-dig mines where you're guaranteed to find some.
7 Tests to Identify Real Amethyst
1. Check for Color Zoning
This is the single most reliable visual test. Hold your amethyst up to a strong light source and rotate it slowly. In real amethyst, you'll see the purple color distributed unevenly — concentrated in angular bands or chevron-shaped zones that follow the crystal's hexagonal growth pattern. Some zones will be darker purple, others lighter, and some may be entirely colorless.
Synthetic amethyst grown in a lab can also show some color zoning, but it tends to be more uniform and predictable. Glass imitations will have perfectly uniform color throughout — no zoning at all. Dyed quartz will show color concentrated along fractures and surface cracks rather than in internal growth zones.
2. The Hardness Test
Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. That means it should:
- Scratch glass easily (glass is 5.5)
- Scratch a steel knife blade (steel is 5.5-6.5)
- NOT be scratched by a knife or steel nail
- Be scratched by a topaz (8) or corundum (9) but not by quartz (7 — equal hardness, no scratch)
If your "amethyst" can't scratch glass, it's not quartz. Period. It might be fluorite (4), glass (5.5), or some other purple impostor. This test alone eliminates most fakes.
3. Look for Inclusions
Use a 10x loupe or magnifying glass to examine the interior. Real amethyst often contains:
- Tiger stripes (zebra stripes): Alternating bands of purple and white/colorless quartz. Very common in Brazilian material.
- Goethite or hematite inclusions: Reddish-brown needle-like or plate-like mineral inclusions. These are natural iron minerals that often accompany amethyst.
- Thumbprint inclusions: Wavy, fingerprint-like patterns caused by partial dissolution and re-healing of the crystal during growth.
- Phantoms: Ghost-like outlines of earlier crystal shapes visible inside the current crystal, caused by pauses in growth.
What you should NOT see: round bubbles. Air bubbles are the hallmark of glass. If you see perfectly round spherical bubbles inside your purple stone, it's glass — not amethyst. Synthetic amethyst will typically be very clean with few inclusions, which can actually be a red flag if the price is too good.
4. The Temperature Test
Real quartz (including amethyst) is an excellent thermal conductor. Pick up the stone and press it to your cheek or lip. Real amethyst will feel distinctly cool, even at room temperature, and it takes noticeably longer to warm up than glass or plastic.
Glass warms to skin temperature quickly — within seconds. Real amethyst maintains that cool feeling longer because quartz conducts heat away from your skin more efficiently. This isn't a definitive test on its own, but combined with other tests, it's a useful quick check.
5. Check the Crystal Shape
If your amethyst is a natural crystal (not cut or tumbled), examine the shape. Real amethyst crystals are hexagonal prisms terminated by six-sided pyramidal faces. The crystal faces should show natural striations (horizontal lines running across the prism faces) — these are growth lines and they're perpendicular to the long axis of the crystal.
Molded glass imitations might approximate crystal shapes, but they won't have true hexagonal symmetry or natural striations. The edges will be too rounded, the faces too smooth, and the overall shape slightly off.
6. UV Light Test
Some amethyst fluoresces under ultraviolet light — though this varies widely by source. Many Brazilian amethysts show a weak to moderate blue-white or green fluorescence under longwave UV. Some don't fluoresce at all. Glass and most dyed stones will fluoresce differently (or not at all), so this can be a supplementary test.
More importantly, certain treatments are detectable under UV. Dyed stones may show unnatural fluorescence patterns, and some irradiation-treated material fluoresces differently than natural amethyst. 7. Use a Rock Identification App

Common Amethyst Imposters
These are the stones and materials most commonly confused with — or sold as — amethyst:
- Purple fluorite: Can look strikingly similar but it's only a 4 on Mohs hardness — a steel knife will scratch it easily. Fluorite also has octahedral cleavage (breaks into triangular shapes) while amethyst has conchoidal fracture (curved, shell-like breaks). Fluorite is often more translucent and can have a waxy feel.
- Dyed quartz/agate: Clear or white quartz that's been soaked in purple dye. The giveaway: color concentrates in fractures and cracks rather than in internal growth zones. Wipe with acetone — if color comes off on the cloth, it's dyed.
- Glass: Purple glass is cheap and everywhere. Check for bubbles, do the hardness test (glass is 5.5, quartz is 7), and look for conchoidal fracture with the telltale sharp edges of quartz.
- Synthetic amethyst: Lab-grown quartz that is chemically identical to natural amethyst. This is the hardest fake to detect because it IS quartz — same hardness, same structure. Look for too-perfect clarity, unusual color zoning patterns, and prices that seem too good for the quality. A gemological lab can distinguish synthetic from natural using advanced testing.
- Charoite: A purple silicate mineral from Siberia. It has a swirling, fibrous texture that looks nothing like amethyst up close — more like purple marble than a crystal. Hardness is 5-6 (softer than amethyst).
- Lepidolite: A purple mica mineral. It's flaky, micaceous, and much softer (2.5-3.5). You can peel layers off with your fingernail. No one who's handled both would confuse them, but in rough rock form at a distance, the purple color can mislead.
Amethyst Grading: What Makes Some Worth More?
Not all amethyst is equal. Here's what determines value:
- Color: The #1 factor. Medium to deep purple with red and blue secondary hues is most valuable. Uniform saturation (in the gem, not necessarily in the rough crystal) matters. Too light = less valuable. Too dark = less valuable.
- Clarity: Eye-clean stones (no visible inclusions to the naked eye) command higher prices. Amethyst is generally expected to be eye-clean as a Type II gemstone.
- Cut: For faceted gems, precision cutting that maximizes color and brilliance adds value.
- Size: Unlike diamonds, amethyst doesn't increase in price per carat dramatically with size. Large clean stones are relatively available. Very large museum-quality specimens are the exception.
- Origin: Certain sources command premiums. Siberian (historical), Four Peaks Arizona, and fine Zambian material are all prized. Uruguayan deep purple is generally worth more than equivalent Brazilian material.
For rough specimens and mineral collectors, different rules apply. Aesthetic crystal form, matrix presentation, and rarity of the locality matter more than gem grading criteria. A perfectly formed amethyst scepter crystal on matrix can be worth far more than a faceted gem of the same weight.
Heat Treatment: When Amethyst Becomes Citrine
Here's something most people don't know: the vast majority of citrine on the market is actually heat-treated amethyst. When you heat amethyst to around 470-750°C (878-1382°F), the iron impurities change oxidation states and the purple color shifts to yellow, orange, or brownish-orange.
This is why most "citrine" you see at gem shows and crystal shops has a burnt orange or reddish-brown color — that's cooked amethyst. Natural citrine tends to be a much paler, smokey yellow. If you see a bright orange "citrine" geode, it was almost certainly a purple amethyst geode before someone put it in an oven.
Heat treatment is permanent and widely accepted in the gem trade — it's not considered "fake." But knowing about it helps you understand the market and avoid overpaying for heated material sold as natural citrine.
If you heat amethyst to even higher temperatures (above 750°C), the color can shift to green — creating the rare "prasiolite" or "green amethyst." Almost all prasiolite on the market is heat-treated.
Caring for Amethyst
Amethyst is reasonably durable at hardness 7, but it has one significant vulnerability: it fades in prolonged direct sunlight. UV radiation can reverse the color-causing process, gradually bleaching amethyst from deep purple to pale lilac or even colorless over months to years of sun exposure.
- Don't display amethyst on windowsills or in direct sunlight
- Store specimens in closed cabinets or display cases away from windows
- Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush — avoid ultrasonic cleaners for included specimens
- Avoid sudden temperature changes, which can cause thermal shock in large specimens
- Keep away from harsh chemicals (amethyst is chemically resistant, but why risk it)
Quick Identification Summary
Here's the rapid checklist for identifying amethyst:
- ✅ Purple color with visible color zoning (angular bands, not uniform)
- ✅ Scratches glass easily (hardness 7)
- ✅ Hexagonal crystal form with horizontal striations
- ✅ Cool to the touch, slow to warm
- ✅ Conchoidal fracture (curved, shell-like breaks)
- ✅ No bubbles (bubbles = glass)
- ✅ Natural inclusions like tiger stripes, phantoms, or goethite needles
- ✅ White streak on unglazed porcelain
